Brad Fritcher

"Fritcher has consistently demonstrated an uncompromising passion and commitment to find and develop his own voice. His insatiable intellectual curiosity and tenacity to investigate and amalgamate musical concepts is a testimonial to his commitment to make an original statement as an artist.” - Charles Iwanusa

The past few years have shown that Brad Fritcher is growing beyond the physical and mental boundaries of an artist. Fritcher, adept trumpeter and emerging composer, has pushed forward with unyielding devotion to his organic vision. It is clear that Fritcher’s musical identity is steeped in an understanding of self, the music around him and process of growth. Debuting his first release with Brother Bear Productions, “Blue Lake Studio Sessions” (June 2013 & ArtPrize Award winner) and second, “The Year of the Architects” shortly thereafter (April 2014). Fritcher’s third, upcoming album as a leader, MOODS, is sure to reveal the next step of his development, showcasing his use of musical storytelling.
Fritcher has studied with many great names in the improvisational field over the past few years. These prominent musicians include Ralph Alessi, Chris Speed, Charles Iwanusa, John Hebert, Uri Caine, Chris Lawrence, and Jim Black, just to mention a few. These continual studies have led to many opportunities within the greater Great Lakes region and beyond.
With a fresh tone, uncompromising ambition and compelling original compositions, Fritcher has been an on call sideman and collaborator in, not only in the jazz community, but in the likes of R&B, Indie Rock, HipHop and Electronic scenes, as well. Artists such as Michael Doyle & Evidence Jazz Group, Mizpah, CARE, Eric Engblade, Cameron Blake, Lucas Wilson & the Bad Disciples, Benjaman James & the Old Mission Collective, and Smooth Operations have all made Fritcher a voice within their visions. Fritcher released a genre blending collaboration album with Brett Cimbalik on Chambray Records entitled “Sunrider,” and a new release by Justin Avdek's Underground Circus will be released October 6th, 2016.

Brad Fritcher's MOODS has developed into a strong collective of ever changing musicians every performance. Patrick Booth (saxes) Travis Swanson (guitar) Joe Vasquez (bass) and Jonathan Taylor (drums) has chiseled itself as the front running unit of MOODS. The chemistry of this quintet over the last 2 years has produced a catalog in their original repertoire and an adventurous live performance. A February 2016 Midwestern tour helped solidify the notions to go into the studio and record. Peter Fox and Josh Kaufman (Stone House Recording) quickly opened their arms to produce the ever evolving MOODS, whom recording in September of 2016.
Transplanting to Grand Rapids in 2014 has brought forth a new challenge and fertile ground to cultivate Fritcher’s creativity. The next few years will be undoubtedly promising for this emerging artist.

"Brad has demonstrated a remarkable dedication and work ethic towards the art of improvisation. He is constantly working to develop his skills as a trumpet player, composer, improviser and artist. Brad is a complete student of music and the trumpet, and is equally dedicated to studying the history and tradition of jazz as he is to developing his own unique concept. I truly believe that if he stays on the path that he is on, Brad Fritcher will be in the upper echelon of players in his generation."

"Grand Rapid's jazz scene is more vibrant than some believe, boasting a bevy of veteran, talented musicians. But Brad Fritcher really stands out as a young, boundary-pushing player who churns out tasty contemporary jazz, which still pays homage to some traditional jazz greats. I've rarely seen a guy this young who's jelled so fast and made the kind of impact he's had in such a short time, period.

Brad Fritcher's MOODS has established itself as one of Grand Rapids' most dynamic, most impressive improvisational jazz groups, unfurling unique, unparalleled sets in every performance, led by trumpeter Brad Fritcher."

“Imagine a collaboration with Grover Washington Jr., Lee Morgan, and Danger Mouse; funky beats, slick chord changes, and melodic lines built on heavy jazz chops. In the sought after genre, Brad Fritcher is original and inventive above all else.”
